UK Heatwaves and Aviation: Dan on LBC

18 Aug, 2026

Safe Landing Community Lead Dan Tipney spoke with James O’Brien on LBC following the severe droughts and wildfires seen across the UK this summer:

The conversation explored what it takes to truly engage with the reality of climate change, and what it takes to feel afraid of it. Dan shared his own experience of cognitive bias, and how he flew as an airline pilot for so long without confronting the danger of burning fossil fuels.

It was only through Human Factors training within the industry that he recognised this bias, and faced the uncomfortable truth: that the industry he loved was contributing significantly to an unsafe future for his children.

This experience was integral to Dan’s role as a Safe Landing co-founder. He recognised that an industry he loves needs a voice from within – from people who want a positive future for both aviation and life on earth.

If Dan’s story resonates with you, and if you would like to join a growing community of aviation workers who are attempting to navigate a more sustainable flightpath for the industry we love – please sign-up to receive our newsletter and a welcome email: https://safe-landing.org and join our Whatsapp announcement and discussion groups so that you can interact with other community members.
