Description:
Contrails (condensation trails) are clouds created by aircraft flying through cold and humid areas of the atmosphere. Some contrails can trap heat like a blanket and warm our planet’s atmosphere, contributing to global heating.
Contrail avoidance may be aviation’s climate opportunity of the decade. Contrails are responsible for 1-2% of global warming (maybe even more), and we can potentially eliminate their warming quickly and with little cost.
A small number of airlines have already run contrail avoidance trials. They’ve figured out how to set up governance, get internal buy-in, integrate contrail data into dispatch workflows, bring pilots and flight crews along, manage costs, and evaluate results. Most of that knowledge has never been shared before.
