Last week, a 15-minute film named ‘Guilt Trip – pilots torn between flight and the fight for the planet’ was released on the Guardian Documentaries. It follows former airline pilot George Hibberd and other Safe Landing community members in their moral conflict working in the aviation industry, loving flying but also caring about the climate crisis.
The Guardian were executive producers alongside Earthrise Studio and DUNA Films. Orban Wallace was the director.
George, Todd Smith and Catherine Thompson, all former airline pilots also took part in a pre-release screening of the film at the Guardian Headquarters in London. George and Todd spoke on a panel after the screening hosted by Damian Carrington, Environment Editor for the Guardian newspaper.
Guardian opinion piece
George also wrote an opinion piece for the Guardian to go alongside the film. In it he talks about his love of aviation driving him to protect the industry for generations to come. He also covers how we can empower aviation workers through Workers’ Assemblies to have a voice in how our industry transforms to address the climate crisis.
At one point, the piece was the third most read opinion piece on the Guardian website.
