Safe Landing have submitted a response to the “Fitness Check of EU Airport Legislation” consultation.
The EU is reviewing three aviation laws that govern how airports operate:
- Slot Regulation: decides which airlines get to use take-off and landing times (slots).
- Airport Charges Directive: sets rules for how airports charge airlines for using their facilities.
- Groundhandling Directive: regulates the companies that provide fuel, baggage handling, and other on-the-ground services.
These rules were written mainly to promote competition decades ago, rather than to deal with climate change. They now impact Europe’s climate goals and we propose that they now need to be modernised to support cleaner, greener and quieter flying.

These EU regulations could be upgraded to align with Europe’s climate goals and accelerate the transition to a cleaner aviation industry.
By updating them, Europe can:
- Cut aviation emissions faster.
- Boost innovation in zero-emission aircraft and fuels.
- Protect the health of aviation workers, air travellers and nearby communities by reducing air pollution and noise.
