Safe Landing attend ‘Sustainable Skies Summit’

16 May, 2024

On 15-16 May 2024, Finlay from Safe Landing attended the Sustainable Skies World Summit, which took place at the Exhibition & Conference Centre at Farnborough International Airport in the UK.

We had some interesting conversations with Negative Emissions Technologies (NETs) companies such as Drax (Bioenergy with Carbon Capture & Storage) and 1POINTFIVE (Direct Air Carbon Capture & Storage):

We also spoke to Hydrogen aircraft developers Zeroavia, and synthetic electro-fuels developers Zero.

There were also some interesting conversations with UK industry lobby group Sustainable Aviation (who advocated for “SAF” produced from used car tyres 🤔) and the Cambridge University-based ‘Aviation Impact Accelerator’ (AIA) led by Rob Miller, and featuring some members of the Safe Landing community such as Kilian Bartsch (pictured with Rob and Finlay in the cover image).

It was great to meet Shashank Nigam and Dirk Singer from Simpliflying who featured us in both their book and podcast titled “Sustainability in the Air”.

The panel discussions were lively, packed with a line-up of interesting speakers, and even included mention of Safe Landing during Dirk Singer’s presentation on aviation marketing and greenwash:

An interesting moment in the vent came via the interactive poll from the Slide app where participants were asked “Are we making the progress, at the rate we need, to reach Net Zero by 2050?”, the answer was an emphatic NO!:

If ever there was a demonstration of the vital need for a community group like Safe Landing, this is it!
