⚡ Planète Ciel / Planet Sky: What Possible Futures for Aviation?

While climate action is increasingly urgent, there have never been so many planes in the sky, and this mode of transport, which has brought humanity closer together and helped globalize the world, has never been as unequal as it is today. While some believe that technological progress will solve the climate crisis, others believe that airplanes have no place in a sustainable future.
How can we define desirable futures for aviation? Four graphic novel authors, Héloïse Chochois, Maureen Guérin, Élie Huault, and Pierre Jeanneau, have explored this question. With the help of Matrice, a center for technological and social innovation, they drew on the reflections of researchers, specialists, industrialists and even users to design stories illustrating four prospective scenarios for 2050.
New fuels, new ways of traveling, new ways of regulating traffic or prioritizing flights… by using fiction to illustrate these hypotheses, they offer an artistic point of view and provide elements of an answer for present and future generations.
In this “Airside Chat” we discussed this work with project lead, Claudia del Prado Sartorius of Matrice. Claudia presented the objectives behind the Planète Ciel project, the approach and process used to develop the four scenarios, the illustrated fiction outputs used to communicate the scenarios, the reception to the output, and feedback/learnings for future work.
After the presentation, the airside chat participants went into four breakout rooms on zoom to discuss each of the four visions. They discussed the relative feasibility and desirability of each vision before presenting their conclusions to the rest of the group. The visions proposed a variety of futures and sparked some vibrant discussion!
