“Slower planes burn less jet fuel” – Safe Landing on BBC News

24 Sep, 2024

👨‍✈️ Finlay Asher of Safe Landing was invited on to BBC News to discuss designing aircraft to fly slower in order to improve fuel efficiency, as recommended by the Aviation Impact Accelerator (AIA).

📕 The AIA recently released a report: ‘Five Years to Chart a New Future for Aviation’, outlining an ambitious plan calling for leaders to make structural changes in order to meet aviation’s net-zero target: https://report.aiazero.org

🌎 The AIA is an initiative led by the Whittle Laboratory and Cambridge Institute for Sustainability Leadership (CISL) at the University of Cambridge.

💡 The key recommendations from the report include:

  1. Accelerating delivery of contrail avoidance ☁️
  2. Unlocking system-wide efficiency gains across aviation (including recommendation to fly slower) ⚖️
  3. Rapidly scaling truly sustainable fuels ⚡
  4. Launching several moonshot tech demos to drive transformative change 🌓

🧑 Paul Hodgson, Technical Director of the AIA, has kindly agreed to provide Safe Landing with an expert talk covering this and other key findings from their report on Thurs 10th of Oct at 11:00-12:00 UTC .
