Safe Landing is looking for an organiser to help grow our global movement of climate-concerned aviation workers.

You will be working alongside our co-founders Finlay (former aircraft engine designer) and Todd (former pilot) who are based in the UK (Bristol and London).

Location: Remote with the occasional need to attend group meetings/events

About Safe Landing:

Safe Landing is a group of aviation workers campaigning for long-term employment by challenging industry leaders to conform with climate science and reject dangerous growth. We empower other aviation workers to demand a sustainable future for air travel and advocate for Aviation Workers’ Assemblies to help trade unions navigate this. A critical part of what we do is voicing an alternative to the dominant narrative that business-as-usual growth of aviation and air traffic is a sensible economic investment that will produce secure jobs and benefit workers. Your main duties & responsibilities will include:

  • Organising a network of climate-concerned aviation workers.
  • Developing a strategy for building our movement globally across a variety of countries, companies and worker roles; growing the numbers of aviation workers who follow and actively engage with our activities.
  • Laying the foundations and structure for our group to grow organically and effectively as new members join.
  • Performing both physical and digital outreach to organisations, groups and individuals who might be interested in joining and contributing to Safe Landing.
  • Onboarding of new members: keeping track of new crew, understanding member motivations, expectations and desires for Safe Landing activities.
  • Planning, scheduling and advertising Safe Landing events for our members in a way that maximises participation and engagement.
  • Hosting and facilitating group events to enable member contributions, collaborative working and inclusive decision-making in order to arrive at shared group positions.
  • Facilitating member collaboration between meetings/events

What we offer:

  • A full-time position of 30 hours per week, with a gross monthly salary of £2500. Part-time working may be considered.

  • The potential to put important issues on the political agenda and to pursue the goals of a fair, equitable and just transition for workers and affected communities.
  • Fixed-term contract until December 2023. There is a high possibility of extension for the right candidate, we seek a candidate interested in long-term employment.

Skills and Background of an Ideal Candidate

Essential:

  • Experience organising and motivating diverse groups of people.
  • Experience planning, coordinating and facilitating group events such as workshops, both in physical and digital settings.
  • Good interpersonal skills: capable of establishing and fostering strong relationships and bringing positive energy to group activities.
  • A reasonable understanding of the climate justice and worker-justice movements.
  • Awareness of, and sensitivity to, the needs and concerns of individuals from diverse cultures, backgrounds and orientations, and being mindful to not reproduce any forms of discrimination. Experience in working together or with marginalised groups.
  • Knowledge of standard computer applications for communication (e.g. Zoom/Teams), word processing, calendar and spreadsheets (e.g. Google docs).
  • Appetite to join our occasional in-person group events, and an ability to accommodate travel to reach these.

Desirable:

  • Experience in communications for social movement groups, e.g. websites, newsletters, administrating messaging (e.g. Whatsapp, Telegram, Signal) groups.
  • Experience with social media (especially LinkedIn, Twitter, Facebook, Instagram).
  • Having an activist background: understanding how social movements work, feeling comfortable with non-hierarchical collaboration and taking on ownership; knowledge of climate issues and the climate movement; interest in working as part of a collective.
  • Having a worker justice and/or trade unionist background with understanding of how trade unions operate.
  • Very good writing skills in English (other languages are an advantage).
  • Interest in aviation/transport policy and related issues e.g. the problems with proposed technological solutions (such as ‘green growth’, biofuels, offsetting).
  • Interest in participatory and deliberative democracy such as Citizens’ Assemblies.

This is a remote position that will ideally be done from the UK/Europe so we’re in similar time zones and to enable some in-person meet-ups. If you are located elsewhere, but think you’d be a good fit for the role, we may be able to accommodate you. Safe Landing operates from grant funding and is fiscally hosted by Climate 2025. You can work on a self-employed basis and invoice for your work, or be paid directly as an employee on PAYE if you are based in the UK.
