How does ultrafine particle pollution impact aviation workers?
💨 This ‘Lunch & Learn’ was on the recent study released by Transport & Environment (T&E) on Ultrafine Particulate (UFP) pollution’s impact, particularly on aviation workers’ health. Watch Safe Landing’s brief overview of the study here:
👇 We also really encourage you to watch T&E’s own video explaining the study and their recommendations:
👩🏫 During a ‘Lunch & Learn’ we heard about the report via a presentation briefing from T&E to discuss the topic ultrafine particle pollution more generally:
- What have been our experiences of attempting to measure, prevent, and mitigate air pollution in our workplaces?
- What are the findings and and recommendations from T&E
- What has stopped us implementing these recommendations so far?
- What more could we do individually and collectively (e.g. via unions and working groups) to further develop and push for these recommendations?
- Which airport/airline/aviation companies have best practice on this, where we can learn, improve and roll-out to other areas?
The presentation pack of the Transport & Environment talk can be downloaded here. The session was recorded and can be viewed here:
In their study, T&E discovered that more than 10% of Europeans live within 20km of the 32 busiest airports on the continent, putting them at a higher risk of health concerns associated with UFPs from aircraft. They spoke to residents near some of these airports to understand what it’s like living with the noise and pollution from planes every day. Safe Landing member and aviation worker Maxine shared her personal story of growing up and living near Amsterdam Airport Schiphol. Watch the video here:
At Safe Landing, we are dedicated to reducing the climate impact of aviation as quickly as possible. We recognise that a sustainable industry means protecting both our planet and the well-being of aviation workers. Let’s create a future where aviation is safe for our climate and our people. Sign up to be part of our global community. Together, we change course towards a safe landing!
